In the long-term management of patients suffering from peptic ulcer and Zollinger Ellison Syndrome, hig and repeat dosing may be required. Here an antiulcerative drug, Rabeprazole sodium was selected for research work. Since it is largely absorbed from the upper intestine, selective delivery of drugs into the colon may be regarded as a better method of drug deliver with fewer side effects and a higher efficacy. The aim of this study was to prepare and evaluate a double coated multiparticulate system for Rabeprazole delivery using ethyl cellulose and mucoadhesive polymers as the primary and secondary polymer respectively and studied. Ethyl cellulose microparticles containing Rabeprazole was produced using the solvent evaporation method. Prepared ethyl cellulose microparticle were spherical, free flowing, nonaggregated and showed no degradation in the acidic medium. Entrapment efficacy of microparticles was about 68.5%. Results showed that drug release was fast and complete and is affected by the amount of core material entrapped. Ethylcellulose microparticles were then coated by various mucoadhesive polymers using emulsion solvent evaporation (ESE) technique. Here, two mucoadhesive polymers (HPMC and PVP) have been selected for the study. The idea for this approach was to prepare a mucoadhesive controlled drug delivery system, in which, ethyl cellulose gives a controlled release of the drug and the mucoadhesive property of the coating polymer helps in complete drug release by its localization (ulcer sites) as well as systemic action (in colon) resulting in more bioavailability, less degradation of drug and relief from the adverse effects of the drug. It was shown that this system could provide a suitable drug release pattern for delivery of active agents.Keywords

An ethnobotanical survey of various medicinal plants used in curing some diseases in villagers of Garhphulghar Gram, Chhattisgarh, was carried out between September - October 2014. Ethnobotanical data were collected by oral interview with local villagers, traditional medical practitioners (TMPs), and herb sellers. From the survey, a total of 30 plant species belonging to 20 families were found to be useful in the treatment of skin problems, cold, fever, cough, headache, diarrhoea, toothache, stomach ache, wounds, diabetes, rheumatism, asthma, dysentery, hair loss and poisoning (snake, scorpion and insect bites). Residents in the study area find the Ayurvedic traditional medicine cheaper as compared to orthodox medicines. It is therefore implicated that attempts should be made on how to explore on documentation, conservation and standardization of the medicinal plants. Also, attention of the researcher and health officials should be drawn towards the importance medicinal and different uses of the medicinal plants and they should intensify the research to reveal other concealed potential of the medicinal plants.Keywords

The present study was designed to investigate the Antiulcer activity of methanolic extract of the leaves of Hydrolea zeylanica (L) Vahl using two different models namely Ethanol and cold restraint stress induced ulcers models in rats. The extract was administered at a dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg orally 30 min prior to ulcer induction. Ranitidine (50 mg/kg) was used as a reference standard. The antiulcer activity was accessed by determining and comparing the ulcer index in the test group with that of the standard group. Gastric volume, total acid and free acid were estimated in rats. Hydrolea zeylanica leaf methanolic extract (HZLME) (500 mg/kg) showed maximum inhibition of gastric acid, free acid and total acid respectively. The ulcer index in the Hydrolea zeylanica leaf methanolic extract treated animals was found to be significantly less in all the models compared to standard drug treated group. However the antiulcer activity of Hydrolea zeylanica leaf methanolic extract was, found to be lesser than that of ranitidine. The results suggest that Hydrolea zeylanica possesses significant antiulcer property which could be due to cytoprotective action of the drug or strengthening of gastric and duodenal mucosa with an enhancement of mucosal defence mechanism.Keywords

The present study was aimed to investigate hepatoprotective activity of methanol extract of the leaves of Terminalia coriacea. Group I served as vehicle control, Group II served CCL4 (2ml/kg, S.C.), Group III served as standard Silymarin (50 mg/kg, p.o.) Group IV and V served as methanolic extracts of Terminalia coriacea (METC) at the dose level (250 and 500 mg/kg, p.o.). The degree of protection was determined by measuring level biochemical marker like alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), direct bilirubin, total bilirubin and Cholesterol. The histopathology study also showed the hepatic protection of extracts. The marker biochemical level such as ALT, AST, ALP, Direct bilirubin, Total bilirubin and Cholesterol were significantly raised in CCL4 treated rats when compared with the normal group (p<0.05), but the METC (500 mg/kg, bw) treated rats exhibited maximum depletion. The histopathology study also showed the hepatic protection of extracts. The results of in vivo hepatoprotective activity showed that the methanol extract of Terminalia coriacea exhibit significant hepatoprotective activity.Keywords
